Why Swindon is becoming the UK's drone defence manufacturing hub


There are certain defence manufacturers that, once they appear on our radar, seem to generate a new investment or growth signal every few months.
TEKEVER has been one of those companies in the Defence Space.
Over the past couple of years, we have followed announcements around investment, new contracts, new facilities, recruitment, UK manufacturing and partnerships.
Individually, each is interesting.
Together, they tell a much bigger story – not only about the growth of TEKEVER, but about Swindon's emerging position as one of the UK's most important centres for drone and autonomous-systems manufacturing.
From individual investment to an industrial cluster
TEKEVER's UK ambitions became particularly significant in May 2025 when it announced a five-year programme to invest more than £400 million in UK drone production and advanced AI capabilities, with plans to create more than 1,000 highly skilled jobs.
Then came Swindon.
The company selected the iconic Spectrum Building for a 254,000 sq ft manufacturing and engineering facility – its largest UK site – designed to support everything from rapid prototyping to the development and production of new platforms.
The facility will bring core production of TEKEVER's larger AR5 system into the UK for the first time while increasing production capacity for the AR3 and AR3 EVO.
But TEKEVER is only part of what is happening.
Swindon is increasingly being positioned as an ecosystem for autonomous systems rather than simply the location of one large drone factory.
The Ministry of Defence has established its Uncrewed Systems Centre in the town, incorporating DroneTEX – described by the Government as Europe's largest drone testing and development facility.
The Government has said the centre is intended to dramatically shorten the journey between developing new technology and deploying it, moving from processes that could previously take years towards development cycles measured in weeks.
Other drone and defence technology businesses have also been attracted to Swindon, while the Council and Brunel University have been pursuing plans for a wider innovation cluster covering uncrewed aerial systems, autonomy, defence technology, R&D and advanced manufacturing.
Swindon is therefore developing several of the ingredients required to create a genuine industrial cluster:
manufacturing, testing, R&D, skills, government support, defence procurement and a growing supply chain.
Why drones – and why now?
The reason behind this investment is much bigger than Swindon.
The role of uncrewed and autonomous systems in modern warfare has changed enormously.
Ukraine has demonstrated how quickly relatively low-cost systems can be developed, adapted and deployed for surveillance, intelligence, electronic warfare and other battlefield applications.
The UK Government is responding accordingly.
Its Strategic Defence Review committed a further £2 billion to autonomy during this Parliament, taking planned defence investment in autonomous systems to £4 billion.
And TEKEVER continues to benefit from that direction of travel.
In July 2026, the Government announced an investment of up to £400 million to equip the British Army with TEKEVER AR5 surveillance drones, supporting UK production and jobs.
That contract followed numerous other developments we had already been monitoring.
This is why TEKEVER has remained firmly on our watch list.
It hasn't been one single factory announcement.
It has been a succession of signals.
Investment. Contract. Facility. Recruitment. Partnership. Capacity. Another contract. More investment.
And each one strengthens the case for further manufacturing and supply-chain requirements around the business.
A subject that has become unexpectedly personal
I've also found this particular area fascinating for another reason.
My son recently completed his Global Perspectives GCSE and chose to look at how warfare has changed.
Helping him with his research while simultaneously following companies such as TEKEVER through my own work gave me two very different perspectives on the same subject.
We looked at how warfare has evolved, who can now access technologies that historically would have been available only to major military powers, and what increasingly remote forms of warfare mean for the people actually living within conflict zones.
One aspect that stayed with me was the psychological impact.
A drone can provide intelligence without putting a pilot in danger. Uncrewed systems can conduct surveillance, support troops, monitor borders and, beyond warfare, assist with activities including search and rescue and emergency response.
But for civilians living within an active conflict, the constant presence or possibility of drones can create an entirely different type of fear and uncertainty.
So watching the industry grow is a strange mixture.
From a manufacturing perspective, it is fascinating.
From a human perspective, some of the reasons driving that growth are considerably harder to think about.
The manufacturing story could become much bigger
There is another development we're beginning to see that I think will become increasingly important.
The defence drone supply chain may not be built entirely by traditional defence manufacturers.
We are already finding examples of businesses looking at how existing manufacturing capability can be repurposed for defence production.
Automotive is particularly interesting.
As vehicle manufacturers restructure, transition technologies or find themselves with redundant production capacity, some of the equipment, engineering expertise, automation and manufacturing infrastructure potentially has another use.
Could an underutilised automotive production line become part of a defence or autonomous-systems supply chain?
In some cases, we're already seeing signs that the answer is yes.
And I believe we'll see more of it.
Not only in the UK, but across Europe.
What does this mean for manufacturing suppliers?
For MFG Insight Group, this is exactly why we don't look at manufacturing projects as isolated announcements.
A £400 million investment announcement matters.
A new factory matters.
A major defence contract matters.
Recruitment matters.
But the relationship between those signals matters even more.
TEKEVER's Swindon operation requires production capability, manufacturing engineering, integration and testing, supply chain, logistics, electronics, metrology and skilled people.
The company's current recruitment activity itself provides clues to the infrastructure being established. Roles advertised for Swindon include manufacturing engineering, electronics, supply chain, logistics and metrology.
One recruitment brief goes even further, describing the requirement to establish an integration and test cell from an empty floor through to serial production of flight-ready AR3, AR3 EVO and AR5 systems.
For suppliers, those are important signals.
And as the wider Swindon ecosystem develops, the opportunity is unlikely to stop at TEKEVER's front door.
Testing facilities, other manufacturers, SMEs, research partnerships and supporting infrastructure can create their own requirements.
That's how clusters develop.
One to continue watching
We've been following TEKEVER for some time, we remain in conversation with the business and are working towards supporting them as their UK manufacturing capability continues to develop.
But we're also now watching what develops around them.
Swindon is becoming more than the location of a drone manufacturer.
The combination of TEKEVER's investment, MOD testing infrastructure, government defence spending, local economic strategy, skills development and other autonomous-systems companies is creating the foundations of a much broader cluster.
And with defence strategy increasingly focused on autonomy – while manufacturers elsewhere begin considering how existing production capacity can be adapted for this rapidly growing market – I suspect this is a manufacturing story that is still in its early stages.
For us, the question is no longer simply “What is TEKEVER doing next?”
It's also:
“What is going to grow around it?”
